Overview
Whether you work in healthcare, education, or any profession that supports others, understanding the theory and neurobiology of attachment is essential.
In this evidenced based 2 day course, you’ll explore the theoretical & practical ways attachment adaptations shape our sense of self, relationships, and interactions throughout life.
You’ll learn & understand different models of attachment and strategies to foster co-regulation and self regulation. This will allow you build attuned, meaningful connections with those you support and develop individual therapeutic strategies to support their growth.
Attachment is a universal experience. Therefore the content of this course is relevant to people of all ages including children, adolescents, adults and aged; across the diverse expression of humanity including those who identify as neurodivergent, mental health, drug and alcohol, living in out of home care.
The added benefit of this course is that we are likely to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves as well.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this 2 day course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the neurobiological foundations and role of attachment in emotional and relational development across different environments and contexts
- Discuss the different theoretical models of attachment and how they can assist with understanding oneself and others
- Explain attachment through a spectrum of attachment adaptations with flexibility, and their impact on self-awareness for both the clients and the therapists as they relate to self-regulation
- Develop individual therapeutic strategies for responding effectively to the various shades of attachment adaptations, enhancing effective therapeutic use of self and co-regulation

Venue
Novotel Sydney Parramatta is located at 350 Church St, Parramatta NSW 2150
It is within walking distance of both the Ferry and Train services to Parramatta.
Alternatively there is limited parking available at the venue, with payment due to the hotel directly.

Parking
Novotel has kindly offered discounted parking for attendees and will provide QR Codes to use at the time of the event.
If you have booked accommodation at the hotel, please use the “Discounted Conference Overnight Rate $30 per night”.
If you are attending the course and wish to park at the venue, please pre-book parking and use the “Discounted Conference Car Park Rate $30 Per Day” each day.
Catering
Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided each day.
Please advise if you have dietary requirements by COB on Wednesday 5th November.
Check-in Register
Registration will start at 8am on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st November.
Handouts
You will be provided with an electronic copy of the handout prior to the workshop, which you may download prior to the workshop if you wish.
You will not be provided with a hard print copy of the handouts at the course.

Since 1989, Kim Barthel has worked globally as an occupational therapist, speaker, mentor, author, and consultant. She is known for her warmth, humility, and gift for making complex ideas practical and relatable, whether speaking to hundreds or mentoring one-on-one.
Kim has an engaging style, blending science with storytelling and humility to inspire audiences across cultures and disciplines. She is the co-author of the Canadian bestseller Conversations with a Rattlesnake with Theo Fleury, and works internationally as a consultant supporting team building and problem-solving in clinical, educational, and business settings.
